Category: achillea millefolium

Yarrow, scientifically known as Achillea millefolium, is a hardy perennial that is a favorite among many gardeners. It reaches a height of 18 to 24 inches and the same in width, forming a nice clump. The Summer Pastel Mix variety features 3 to 4 inch flower clusters in a range of pastel shades, including pink, rose, orange-red, purple, gray, salmon, and mauve.

This yarrow mix grows as a perennial in USDA zones 3 to 10. The flower clusters are long-lasting and make excellent cut flowers, and they also dry well for use in dried arrangements. To dry the yarrow, hang the stems upside down in a well-ventilated, dark, and dry room.

The recommended sowing rate for yarrow is 6 to 7 seeds per plant or approximately 1000 seeds to cover 75 square feet. Start the yarrow seed indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last expected frost date. Press the seed into the soil, lightly cover it, and keep the seed moist. At a temperature of 68°F, germination usually occurs within 21 days.

Yarrow thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soil. It is typically deer resistant, and plants should be spaced 16 inches apart. In areas with a long growing season, yarrow can be directly sown outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. It takes approximately 90 days from sowing to blooming.

To promote continuous bloom, deadheading the spent flowers is recommended. Additionally, the clumps should be divided every 3 to 4 years to keep the plant healthy and vigorous.
